In April of 2007, the U.S. Trust Survey of Affluent Americans was prepared for the United States Trust Company which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Charles Schwab Corporation. Gregg and Lisa Whitney think it is important for their clients to follow the attitudes and trends of wealthy Americans on a wide variety of topics as most of their clients hold real estate as a part of their investment portfolio.

Their partnership, also known as Whitney and Associates, has a proven, long-term track record of successful real estate sales in the La Jolla, California Real Estate Market. Those surveyed in this study released recently constitute Americans with an investable net work greater than $5 million, not including primary residence. Included in this study is a special sub-sample of ultra high net worth Americans with total assets of $25 million or more. Gregg and Lisa Whitney want you to know that an income qualification was not used in the current version of the study and the overall qualification was based solely on investable assets leading to an overall wealthier sample. An independent marketing research firm was retained to conduct this survey and focuses itself on the top wealthiest Americans and their beliefs, concerns and attitudes.

What the study found was that 85% of high net worth Americans reported that their portfolios met or exceeded their expectations during the past fiscal year. This is good news for not only stocks, but for real estate investments as well. The polling of high net worth Americans revealed some new trends about philanthropy.

Stocks are reported as the single largest investment among high net worth individuals. Forty-four percent report that portfolios are made up of this type of investment with the plurality of these stocks being domestic at 34% and 10% being international stocks.

An interesting distinction between the highest net worth individuals or $25 million or more in total assets and those under $25 million, is that the ultra high net worth individuals appear more likely to invest in hedge funs with their portfolios consisting of six percent of these funds compared to only two percent for the under group. However, more than half of the total group, 55% agree that hedge funds can offer a good return on investment.

As far as good investments, over 70% of the super high net worth and high net worth individuals reported that they own real estate as a part of their investment portfolio.

Eighty-five percent of all high net worth individuals report that their portfolios met or exceeded their expectations during the past fiscal year and only 13 percent felt their investments fell short of expectations. This evaluation of their overall performance of portfolios is consistent regardless of the size of the portfolio.

Investing in real estate had the second greatest impact of specific investments, missing the top generating spot by only 1% in generating wealth of the following types of investment. The impact of specific investments in generating wealth for the super high net wealth and high net wealth individuals are as follows:
